Caitlin Clark sent a classy message to Cori Close after UCLA finally broke through and won the women’s NCAA title.
Clark’s post landed because it recognised more than one result. It pointed to the years of work and belief required to take a program from contender status to the top of the sport.
That is what made UCLA’s breakthrough feel bigger than a single night. It was the payoff to a build that had been pushing toward this level for a long time.
Clark reacted publicly after the championship in a post on X, and her wording made clear that this was as much about Cori Close as the trophy itself.
Rather than simply celebrating the result, Clark highlighted the reputation Close has built across the sport through her energy and commitment to the game.
She wrote, “Not many care about the game as much as Coach [Cori] Close… couldn’t be happier for her!! Congrats, UCLA Women’s Basketball.”
That stood out because Close has long been viewed as one of the sport’s most respected program builders, and Clark’s message reflected that wider feeling.
UCLA’s title run gave real weight to Clark’s message because the Bruins did not just sneak through the tournament; they finished it with a statement win.
The Bruins beat South Carolina 79-51 in the national championship on April 5 in Phoenix, securing the program’s first NCAA women’s basketball title and capping a 37-1 season under Close.
Lauren Betts was named the Final Four’s Most Outstanding Player, while Gabriela Jaquez scored 21 points in the title game.
That is why the moment mattered so much. Close had already built UCLA into a national power, but this was the result that changed the conversation around her tenure.
Clark’s reaction fits that context. It was not just praise after a big win, it was recognition that one of the game’s most admired coaches had finally delivered the title her program had been chasing.
