Cardiff Rugby has formally confirmed its intention to enter administration, marking a historical moment in the club and leading the Welsh Rugby Union (WRU) to step in to protect its future.

On Tuesday, the club filed a notice of intention to appoint an administrator in court, a move that gives the club two weeks to find survival options.

A statement released by the club confirmed, “Cardiff Rugby can confirm notice of intention to appoint administrators has been filed. Please rest assured that everything possible is being done to protect our employees and the future of the club. We have a plan in place, and we will update you as soon as possible.”

Although officially not in control, WRU is expected to take temporary operational responsibilities in the future. The club has also made it clear that it is working closely alongside the Cardiff board and prospective administration to ensure the continuity of the club’s operation.

Cardiff’s financial challenges follow just 16 months after hopes of a secure future were taken high when Helford Capital Limited took over 84.55% of the club, a move approved by a majority of stakeholders.

However, the financial help promised by Helford reportedly fell short, creating doubt about the management of the club and ownership structure.

This crisis has followed the collapse of other professional clubs. While it is understood that the special purpose vehicle (SPV) is likely to take charge of Cardiff’s assets in the interim, the long-term future remains uncertain.

Meanwhile, board member Sam Warburton has stepped down to focus on other ventures, although sources reveal his move was unrelated to the club’s challenges.

As Cardiff prepares for its remaining fixtures in the United Rugby Championship match on April 19, the spotlight remains on the WRU to bring stability.
