Carlos Alcaraz was delighted to see NBA star Jimmy Butler supporting him during the Indian Wells Open despite the Golden State Warriors forward dealing with an injury.
The Spanish tennis star has developed a friendship with Butler over the past few years.
Seeing the NBA player attend his match while going through rehabilitation clearly meant a lot to Alcaraz.
ATP Tour reported Alcaraz’s appreciation after Butler showed up at Indian Wells while recovering from injury.
“He’s my guy. I knew that he was coming. He told me, ‘I’m just doing my rehab, [the tournament is] really close, so I’m going to show up to watch you,’” Alcaraz said.
He added: “So I’m just really happy that with everything he’s been through with the rehab, that he can show up and watch my match and have a little bit of time with him afterwards.
“I just really appreciate that. I’m not able to see him very often, but he’s making that effort to come over.”
Butler has been working his way back from injury, yet still made time to attend the tournament. For Alcaraz, the visit highlighted the bond the two athletes have developed across different sports.
The world-class tennis player also revealed that he hopes Butler can eventually see his basketball skills as well.
“I just really want him to watch me how I shoot or how I play basketball, and then receive a little bit of advice from him.
“He didn’t watch me playing basketball at all, but I would love to just show up at one of his trainings when he’s [healthy] again,” Alcaraz concluded.
Alcaraz has often spoken about his love for basketball and his admiration for NBA players. Learning from Butler would clearly be an opportunity he would relish.
For now, though, the Spanish star is simply happy that Butler made the effort to support him during the tournament.
