The Carolina Panthers are releasing veteran wide receiver Hunter Renfrow ahead of Tuesday’s 53-man roster deadline, per ESPN ‘s Adam Schefter. He signed with Carolina after a one-year absence from the National Football League this offseason.

Renfrow hauled in four catches for 12 yards in two preseason games with Carolina. He was selected with the No. 149 overall pick in the Fifth Round of the 2019 NFL Draft and has played 73 career games (all with Oakland/Las Vegas Raiders).

Renfrow was a two-star recruit coming out of Socastee (Myrtle Beach, SC) in the Class of 2014, where he was unranked. He joined Clemson as a walk-on, where he’d play from 2014-2018. As a Tiger, he played well above his projections as hauled in 186 catches for 2,133 yards and 15 touchdowns in 53 career games.

No touchdown however was more important than his game-winning receiving touchdown from Deshaun Watson with just one second remaining in the 2017 College Football Playoff National Championship.

Renfrow has spent his career playing above projections

In college, Renfrow was a member of two National Championship teams, was selected to the Third Team All-ACC twice and received the Burlsworth Trophy in 2018 (awarded to the best player who began their career as a walk-on). He was then selected by the Raiders in the 2019 NFL Draft, kicking off his NFL journey.

Just as he did in college, Renfrow played well above his projections with the Raiders. He spent five seasons in Oakland/Las Vegas, where he caught 269 career passes for 2,884 yards and 17 touchdowns in 73 games. He was even named a Pro Bowl selection in 2021.

Renfrow however was released by Las Vegas following the 2023 season and did not sign with a team in 2024. After sitting out the season, he signed with Carolina in April but will now be looking to continue his NFL journey elsewhere (that is, if he wants to continue playing).

This move now leaves seven wide receivers currently on Carolina’s depth chart, although Adam Thielen is rumored to be getting traded back to Minnesota at any moment.

The Panthers open their 2025 season on Sept. 7 on the road against the Jacksonville Jaguars. Kick-off is scheduled for 1:00 PM on FOX.
