Since retiring from the NBA, Charles Barkley has carried on with a few habits over the course of the past few decades. One was his passion for the game of golf. Then there is his unabashed manner of speaking whatever he wants. Lastly, his love for gambling.

When he was still playing, he lost a lot of money through gambling, which almost left him broke. Tales of him betting big and then losing millions are part of NBA folklore. He has also won a lot of money, but his habit of trying to go back and bet the winnings has, in most cases, backfired. It is the habit of a compulsive gambler, and the Hall of Famer admittedly was one.

Over the past decade or more, he has slowed down. He does not bet as much as he used to, and tends to walk away once he has either lost a certain amount or won.

The 62-year-old was on NFL star George Kittle‘s newly launched podcast, Kittle Things. While talking about gambling, they asked the NBA legend about his experience at the tables while he was at the American Century golf Championship.

So, we get together after a round every day and go to the cigar bar, and I said, ‘Well, guys, I’m up quite a bit. What if I take a little bit and go down to the casino, y’all keep the rest. One of my friends says to me. ‘I got a great idea. Why don’t you put your top lip together with your bottom lip and shut up. We are not gambling tonight. We’re up good.’

Since they were talking about golf, George Kittle then asked Charles Barkley how his golf game is nowadays. The Inside the NBA star then went on to detail his journey with golf.

I used to be really good at golf. Then I developed the yips for about 20 years or more. I’m over them now. I developed a nervous hitch, it’s funny for other people. I’ve been to hell and back with my golf game. I played one-handed for a few years, I played lefty for a few years.

At this point, the NFL star’s wife, Claire Kittle , wondered how it was even possible to play golf one-handed or even with one’s offhand. It is the love for the game that kept the former Phoenix Suns star committed to doing whatever was necessary to play.
