It's an interesting situation for both teams as they try to start anew.

Appalachian State has known plenty of success at the FBS level - it's the winningest program in the CFP era to not make the College Football Playoff - but it fell off last year with its first losing season since moving up to the big league in 2014.

In comes longtime NFL assistant Dowell Loggains, with the task of ramping up the attack again. His Mountaineers get this, then a layup against Lindenwood, and then comes the Sun Belt opener at Southern Miss.

Charlotte has just one winning season in its ten years as an FBS program, and it paid to be better by grabbing MAC Champion head man Tim Albin from Ohio. H

e won't work miracles right away, but with this game in Charlotte, and with winnable home games against Monmouth and Rice after hosting North Carolina, there's a chance to make a splashy start.

Why App State Will Win

There's enough talent in place to get back up to speed right away on offense.

There are nice options at quarterback and receiver from the portal to work with, the interior of the line is solid, and it should all work against a 49er defense that's effectively starting over, especially up front.

Why Charlotte Will Win

Can the App State defense hold up?

Loggains is an offensive coach, and he has the coaching staff in place to boost up the D, but it's coming off a rough season that needs the transfers to help with more good options right away.

Charlotte should at least be able to keep pressing against the Mountaineers if the passing game is just okay. The 49ers were among the worst teams in the nation in completion percentage and struggled in third-down conversions, but when it completed throws, it did okay.

App State is more season-ready, but Charlotte can win this if the attack doesn't make mistakes and keeps the chains moving.

In a fun nip-and-tuck game, the 49ers and Albin will get the job done late with two fourth quarter scores to get out alive.
