It's the middle of summer which means one thing is certain -- it's time for everyone to reveal their annual "loudest stadiums in college football" lists.
USA Today's Blake Toppmeyer revealed his rankings of the loudest stadiums in the SEC on Thursday. He has Neyland Stadium, the home of the Tennessee Vols, at No. 3 on his list, behind The Swamp in Gainesville (the Florida Gators' home stadium is at No. 1 on his list) and LSU's Tiger Stadium.
"Tennessee fans are ruthless," wrote Toppmeyer. "Former Oklahoma quarterback Baker Mayfield described experiencing 'a different type of loud' while playing as an opponent in Neyland. And when 'Rocky Top' plays on a loop, it’s psychological torture."
Alabama's Bryant-Denny Stadium and Georgia's Sanford Stadium round out Toppmeyer's top five (check out the rest of the list here).
Calling Tennessee fans "ruthless" is probably fair. And there's no doubt that Rocky Top is torture for opposing teams that visit Neyland Stadium.
As for Toppmeyer's rankings, I think the stadiums in his top five could probably be ranked in any order. All of those places are ridiculously loud when they're at their best. And they're all extremely challenging environments to play in.
But as sports fans, we feel the need to rank everything so we can then debate it. Which is why I'm sure folks everywhere are debating Toppmeyer's rankings this week.
