After the Chicago Bears used the No. 10 overall pick on him, fans have been patiently waiting to see tight end Colston Loveland in action. But as he works his way back from shoulder surgery, Loveland has been absent from OTAs.
In his place, Cole Kmet has been able to show what he brings to the table. While he has been overshadowed by Loveland throughout the offseason, Kmet has been a productive tight end during his time in Chicago. Head coach Ben Johnson is certainly thinking of ways to get Loveland and Kmet on the field at the same time.
Kmet’s play at OTAs has caught the eye of many, including Clay Harbor of the Chicago Sports Network. If his offseason success translate to the regular season, Harbor sees Kmet having an explosive year in Johnson’s debut.
“Cole Kmet had an excellent day out there, he caught some passes in the middle,” Harbor said. “They motioned him a lot, he looked good in the blocking game, he was lining up outside, he was lining up in the slot, he was lining up at tight end, he was catching the ball over the place. Ben Johnson is going to be salivating because he knows he’s going to be able to play with defenses with that 12 personnel, splitting these guys out into different spots.”

Ben Johnson completely changes passing offense
After seeing the Bears finished their 2024 season ranked second-to-last in passing, averaging 181.5 yards per game, Johnson knew things needed to change upon his arrival. Adding 12 personnel concepts into the gameplan should keep opposing defenses on their toes.
Chicago selected Loveland mainly due to his pass catching ability. He made 117 receptions for 1,466 yards and 11 touchdowns over his three years at Michigan. Johnson will scheme up ways to get him open in space, allowing the tight end to use his athleticism to blow by tight ends. Overall, Loveland should be an intermediate option for quarterback Caleb Williams.
Kmet offers more blocking chops, meaning he will be the in-line tight end. However, he can still make a difference in the pass game in short to intermediate routes. With Keenan Allen and his team-leading seven touchdowns leaving the franchise, it wouldn’t be shocking to see Kmet get those looks in the red zone.
Ultimately, Johnson must find a way to put all the puzzle pieces together. But if the gameplan pans out how he is expecting, Loveland Kmet could be one of the scariest tight end duos in the league.
Don’t forget about Cole Kmet
Kmet had a down year in 2024, catching 47 passes for 474 yards and four touchdowns. But everyone struggled in Chicago’s passing game. His two seasons prior show a tight end who should be a valuable resource for the Bears.
In 2022, Kmet caught 50 passes for 544 yards and a career-high seven touchdowns. A year later, he set career-highs in both receptions (73) and yardage (719) while scoring six touchdowns. Kmet was playing with a different quarterback, but he still proved to be a playmaker and trusted safety blanket whenever called upon.
It’ll be easy for Kmet to be lost in the shuffle just looking at the depth chart. Alongside Loveland, the Bears also have wide receivers DJ Moore, Luther Burden and Rome Odunze in the fold. It may be difficult for Kmet to shine in the box score on a weekly basis.
Still, Johnson is planning on bringing a dynamic offense to Chicago, and he has been adamant that Kmet will still be in a featured role. When Loveland returns, things will get a bit trickier. But as long as the spotlight is on him, Kmet is proving he can handle the pressure.

Chicago Bears looking at bringing back familiar face at running back
The Chicago Bears don’t appear satisfied with their running back room with one week left to decide the 53-man roster. The Bears have until Aug. 26 to make their final cuts before preparing for the Minnesota Vikings in Week 1. The Bears entered training camp with questions at running back. Veteran D’Andre Swift had a down year in 2024. Roschon Johnson isn’t a long-term solution, and seventh-round pick Kyle Monangai will have a steep learning curve when the regular season begins. The Chicago Bears worked out a former running back Per Aaron Wilson of KPRC, the Bears worked out running backs Royce Freeman, undrafted rookie Kylin James and former Carolina Panthers practice-squad player Dillon Johnson. Royce Freeman played with the Bears in 2024 Of the three, Freeman is the only running back with stats at the NFL level. Freeman, a third-round pick by the Denver Broncos in 2018, has appeared in 79 games and started nine games. He’s rushed 471 times for 1,472 yards and 10 touchdowns. The Bears signed Freeman to the practice squad in December. He was then signed to the Los Angeles Rams practice squad in January. He last played a regular-season game in 2023, when he added 319 yards and two touchdowns in 14 games for the Rams. The Bears are signaling their need for a running back this summer. There are other options available in the trade market, as the Washington Commanders are shopping Brian Robinson Jr. during the preseason. More running backs will be available after other teams trim their rosters to 53 players, but they might not be the type of athletes to make a significant boost for the offense early in the regular season.
Giants have firm stance on possible Jameis Winston trade
The New York Giants have one of the deepest quarterback rooms in the NFL, and there has been speculation that Jameis Winston could be the odd man out when the regular season begins. It does not sound like Winston is going anywhere, however. Russell Wilson is expected to be the Giants' starting quarterback in Week 1. The big question is whether Jaxson Dart or Winston will enter the year as Wilson's primary backup. Dart has played well through two preseason games, and Brian Daboll and his coaching staff have raved about the former Ole Miss star. Some have wondered if the Giants could entertain trade offers for Winston should they decide they view Dart as their No. 2 quarterback. Assistant general manager Brandon Brown was asked about that on Tuesday, and he all but ruled it out. "I appreciate people that are interested, but Jameis is a New York Giant. The way that he's gone about his business from day one, he's made it very intentional of the fact that he wants to be here and he wants to be here for the long haul," Brown said. "Teammates love him. His preparation process, whether it's the off-field things that he does in terms of community relations, Bible studies, things in the locker room, galvanizing the group together — not just the quarterback room, but the offense as a whole. "He's been comic relief, but he's also been a really good example of how to be a pro and handle your business in terms of prehab, rehab and postgame care. So, I'm happy he's here, and he's gonna continue to do those things. He hasn't wavered, and he hasn't been shaken by any distractions at all." Winston signed a two-year, $8M contract with the Giants in free agency this offseason. The deal could climb as high as $16M with incentives, but he would need to play quite a bit to hit those. The Giants value Winston's extensive experience, just as they value Dart's upside. There is a reason they signed both Wilson and Winston and traded up to draft Dart. They believe in all three players, and they likely will not be inclined to trade Winston unless they receive an excellent offer.
Russell Westbrook already made his biggest free-agency mistake
A first-ballot Hall of Famer whenever he decides to hang it up, Russell Westbrook has long been revered as one of the NBA's premier point guards, both with his aggressive play and infectious energy. Despite the former MVP's impressive resume, though, he remains unsigned nearly two months after free agency opened on June 30. It's no secret that Westbrook is no longer an All-Star-caliber player, but it's certainly jarring to see his name alongside the summer's other leftovers. Over the last two seasons, Russ has willingly accepted a bench role and shown his ability to contribute even without being the offense's focal point. He finished top-10 in Sixth Man of the Year voting with both the Los Angeles Clippers in 2023-24 and the Denver Nuggets in 2024-25. The Nuggets may have been Westbrook's most seamless fit since the 36-year-old left the Oklahoma City Thunder, which brings us to the key mistake he made this offseason: He decided to bet on himself when his career was trending south. It's understandable why Westbrook decided to decline his player option with Denver. $3.5 million is pocket change relative to today's NBA salaries, so it's possible the nine-time All-Star expected to land a bigger payday on name brand alone. But that's no longer the case with Westbrook. The Nuggets, like several teams before them, took a chance on Westbrook, whose play has been nothing short of a wild card in recent years. Alongside Nikola Jokic, though, he found success operating off-ball by utilizing his natural explosiveness, a sensible calling card for one of basketball history's most athletic playmakers. It seemed like the perfect spot for Westbrook to finish out his career. Instead, he has continued to seek out a more lucrative deal with a team that is looking to give him more offensive freedom. While the Sacramento Kings and New York Knicks are both reportedly interested in adding his services, neither team can offer both a higher salary and an expanded role. It also seems unlikely that Westbrook will find a more seamless fit for himself than what he had in Denver. Whether it's due to his erratic offensive tendencies or his relentless determination to involve himself in every action, it's easy to see why teams have to talk themselves into Westbrook at this point in his career. It appears that Russ will finally be picked up soon, but the damage has already been done. The two-time scoring champion already gave up his best chance at winning a title once he departed from Denver.
