Connor McDavid Urged to 'Take a Page' Out of LeBron James' Book

The Edmonton Oilers are bracing for a pivotal season that could mark the end of team captain and face of the NHL, Connor McDavid’s tenure with the Canadian franchise.

The three-time Hart Trophy winner is eligible to sign a contract extension in under two weeks, on July 1, as he approaches the start of his final year under contract with the Oilers.

According to TSN’s Bryan Hayes, however, there’s no guarantee McDavid will sign an extension on that date or at any point before the start of next season.

“I think it’s certainly possible (he doesn't sign the extension this offseason),” Hayes said. “It doesn’t mean he’s not going to stay in Edmonton long-term. It’s almost that he would look at this and say, ‘What do I have to do this for this summer?’”

Hayes suggested that McDavid is only focused on winning, adding that, considering his reputation as the best player in the NHL, he should take a page from stars in other sports, using his leverage to pressure the Oilers into going all-in to build a true championship roster before committing to a long-term future with the organization.

“He could take a page out of the books of other great players in other sports, like LeBron James,” Hayes said. “Put some pressure on the Oilers, force them to continue to be desperate, force them to continue to make moves that will help him and help his cause to win a Stanley Cup.”

The Oilers have reached the Stanley Cup Final in back-to-back seasons, but both runs ended in losses to the Florida Panthers.

McDavid, meanwhile, confirmed during his final media availability of the season on Thursday that he isn’t in a hurry to make any commitments.

"I’m not in a rush to make any decision," McDavid said. "I don't think there needs to be any timeline.

"Ultimately, still need to do what’s best for me and my family."
