Controversial host leaving WFAN for Fox Sports

Craig Carton, who revived his radio career with New York's WFAN after serving time in federal prison, is leaving his afternoon drive-time show and staying with Fox Sports full time, according to Andrew Marchand of the New York Post.

Carton, who hosted "Carton and Roberts" in the afternoons on the sports talk station, has been hosting a morning TV show on FS1 since September 2022. The double duty had been a bit tiring for the veteran radio host, per Marchand's article, so focusing more of his time on television appears to be the better option between the two.

His full-time move provides some relative stability for the cable channel, especially after Shannon Sharpe existed "Undisputed." Sharpe's now-former partner, Skip Bayless, is looking for a new co-host of "Undisputed," with the network looking at internal candidates such as LeSean McCoy and Joy Taylor. FS1 is also gearing up to host the Women's World Cup this summer, so there could potentially be more eyes on its debates shows for those who may tune in for the soccer matches.

"The Carton Show" itself hasn't set the world on fire, much like most of the talk shows on FS1. Yet, he'll be getting a seven-figure payday for it with hopes that the program will catch on.

Per Marchand:

Carton has not rated very well in his first year at FS1, but there is hope among some at FS1 that, without the constriction and exposure of radio, Carton will perform better on TV.

Last summer, FS1 tried to hire Damien Woody to be Carton’s co-host, but ESPN retained Woody.

Brandon Jennings, Tim Hardaway, and Cody Decker have been panelists on “The Carton Show.”

On camera, Carton stands, while the ex-athletes sit at a desk for segments, making almost a teacher-student dynamic.

Carton originally hosted a talk show with former NFL quarterback and CBS Sports analyst Boomer Esiason from 2007 until 2017 when he was arrested for his role in a ticketing Ponzi scheme. Carton served three years in federal prison and was ordered to make upward of $5 million in restitution. His return to WFAN was a controversial one as some sports media observers felt that he didn't deserve to return to the station, but he and Roberts managed to become the top-rated sports show in the New York City area, besting "The Michael Kay Show" on ESPN.

He'll still host his Saturday show on WFAN, "Hi, My Name is Craig," where he shares anecdotes on how gambling impacted his life and family. Though his weekend show may feel out of place for sports talk radio, it comes at a time where sports betting has become almost as synonymous as having a beer and hot dog at games.
