Duke star Cooper Flagg has been the talk of the town, with the most recent update being Flagg, 18, and his upcoming private visit with the Dallas Mavericks in Dallas on June 17, sources told ESPN. Flagg will be the Mavericks’ No. 1 pick in the 2025 NBA Draft on June 25. Read on for further details.
On Sunday, ESPN’s Shams Charania posted on X, formerly Twitter, “Cooper Flagg plans to have a private visit with the Mavericks in Dallas on June 17, sources tell ESPN. One week after his first official Mavs visit, Flagg is set to be Dallas’ No. 1 pick in the NBA draft on June 25.”
Charania’s post attracted ample attention from the NBA world. One user responded, “Give me one good reason why the Mavs won’t win it all.” Another user replied, “Doesn’t sound very private to me.”
Cooper Flagg hasn’t only been linked with the Dallas Mavericks. Flagg has also been linked to the Boston Celtics and Phoenix Suns. The Celtics might want to complete a blockbuster trade to tread water in the 2025-26 NBA season, as Jayson Tatum has been rehabbing an Achilles tendon injury. The Suns could trade Devin Booker to the Mavericks in exchange for Flagg, Klay Thompson, PJ Washington, Naji Marshall, and Caleb Martin.
The Celtics’ potential blockbuster trade could happen. The Celtics already conducted a formal interview with Flagg during the 2025 NBA Draft Combine. Plus, Flagg’s a Maine native and a lifelong Celtics fan who might want to play for the home team in New England.
The Suns’ possible trade is highly unlikely but never say never. Booker is the face of the franchise. However, Booker’s in his prime, so the Mavericks trading for Booker would make sense. Booker can complement Kyrie Irving as a dynamic perimeter presence on the wing.
Cooper Flagg might not have seemed too interested in the Dallas Mavericks, but the Mavericks have seemingly shown immense interest in Flagg. ESPN’s Jonathan Givony wrote Sunday, “The Mavericks have no plans to work out any other prospects for the No. 1 pick and have made clear publicly and privately that they plan on selecting Flagg when Adam Silver puts them on the clock to open the 2025 NBA Draft.”\\\
“His selection will allow the Mavs’ front office to officially turn the page on the Luka Doncic era, only four months after a stunning trade that sent the franchise stalwart to the Los Angeles Lakers, enraging their fan base and sending shockwaves through the NBA.”
Flagg’s a former Duke star with exceptional defensive and offensive skills, along with clutch performances. The Mavericks seem to be keen on developing Flagg alongside Irving and Anthony Davis, but we’ll see what happens.
