Danish cyclist Jonas Vingegaard wins 2022 Tour de France

Danish cyclist Jonas Vingegaard is the 2022 Tour de France champion, beating two-time defending champ Tadej Pogačar for the title by three minutes, 34 seconds.

Vingegaard, 25, was racing in his second Tour after finishing second to Pogačar last year by five minutes, 20 seconds. Pogačar entered 2022 as the favorite to win his third straight Tour.

It was Pogačar who led the majority of the first half of the Tour, but Vingegaard surpassed him with stellar performances on the mountain stages. Vingegaard took over the yellow jersey by winning the 11th stage -- his first ever stage victory -- and all but secured the general classification victory by winning again on the 18th stage.

In addition to winning the general classification, Vingegaard was also the owner of the polka dot jersey as the winner of the mountain classification.

In the decisive 18th stage, Pogačar made a rare mistake and fell from his bike while in a battle for the lead with Vingegaard. The latter was widely praised when he opted to wait for Pogačar to catch back up before eventually winning the stage.

Pogačar, 23, was the winner of the young rider classification and Wout van Aert won the points classification.
