Dave Ewers, the formidable back-row forward who played a pivotal role in Exeter Chiefs’ historic 2020 double-winning campaign, has officially retired from professional rugby at the age of 34.

Ewers’ retirement marks the end of a career that spanned over 15 years at the top level, defined by consistency, physical dominance, and unwavering commitment.

Ewers spent the majority of his career at Exeter, making his mark with powerful ball-carrying and relentless defensive work. Weighing 125 kg and standing out in the Premiership as a force in the back row, he became a central figure in the club’s rise from the Championship to Premiership champions.

After brief stints with Ulster and, most recently, the Stormers, where he fulfilled a long-held dream of playing in the Currie Cup, Ewers announced his retirement in a heartfelt message posted to his official Facebook page.

“Can’t thank my family for everything they’ve done for me… All the cold and wet days you endured just to watch me, thank you,” Ewers wrote in his farewell post. His message was met with an outpouring of support from fans, former teammates, and coaches, praising his dedication and achievements.

Reflecting on his time with Exeter, he added, “It was a special journey going from the Championship to winning the double in 2020.” That landmark season, which saw the Chiefs lift both the Gallagher Premiership and Heineken Champions Cup trophies, cemented his place in the club’s history.

As Ewers hangs up his boots, his career stands as a testament to grit, loyalty, and professionalism—an enduring legacy in modern rugby.
