Delta Airlines Has Ended 17 International Flights

Over the past several years, Delta Air Lines has emerged as arguably the top airline in the United States, and it now has its sights set on the rest of the world as it consistently targets international expansion.

However, despite that planned international expansion and CEO Ed Bastian’s stated goal of becoming the top carrier across the world, Delta has actually cut more than a dozen international flights this year.

Delta Emphasizes International Expansion

Over the past several months, Delta has continually emphasized plans to expand its international presence.

During a recent appearance on the Airlines Confidential podcast with Scott McCartney and Henry Harteveldt, Bastian made it clear that Delta wants to be put in the same category as the top airlines in the world, like Emirates and Singapore Airlines.

“I like to think of Delta as a leader in the U.S. travel industry, but when people talk about who are the global leaders, I want to make sure Delta is on the tip of their tongue. That’s different for a U.S. carrier. Often, whether it’s the Middle Eastern carriers or the Asian carriers or Singapore or some higher-end premium brands, Delta should be considered in that category,” Bastian said.

This echoed some comments made by Delta president Peter Carter earlier this week.

“We want to become stronger, better, faster in the trans-Pacific, and we want to become the leading U.S. carrier,” Carter told CNBC. “Ultimately … the real goal is to become the leading global carrier, which is a pretty audacious goal.”

Delta Cuts International Flights

While Delta is committed to expanding its international reach, that doesn’t mean that Delta isn’t cutting some international flights. In fact, according to a list compiled by Simple Flying this month, Delta has actually cut 17 different international routes from major hubs over the past 18 months.

Atlanta’s connection to Saint Vincent ended in September 2026, which is notable considering it is the only service from the United States. Boston dropped its São Paulo Guarulhos route in March 2025.

From Detroit, the carrier ended service to Tulum in April 2025. New York JFK saw multiple routes cut: Geneva (October 2025), London Gatwick (September 2025), Brussels (January 2026), Antigua (May 2026), Kingston (January 2026), and Bridgetown (May 2026).

Los Angeles’ LAX routes that ended include Guatemala City (May 2025), Tahiti (June 2025), San Salvador (May 2025), and Mazatlan (April 2025). Orlando’s London Heathrow service ended in March 2025.

Minneapolis discontinued three routes: St. Maarten (April 2026), Mazatlan (April 2026), and Tulum (April 2025).

While it’s clear that Delta’s broader push is to expand internationally, these flights will no longer continue.
