The one position battle at training camp that the Philadelphia Eagles have been following from Day 1 has been the CB2 job opposite of Quinyon Mitchell.
Throughout training camp, Adoree' Jackson and Kelee Ringo were the main competitors going at it for the job. This past week at practice, that all changed with Ringo being demoted to backup and Cooper DeJean taking some reps at CB2 in the base defense. Newcomer Jakorian Bennett and rookie Mac McWilliams also got some looks with the first team.
Right before the Eagles' 19-17 win over the New York Jets, it appeared that the position battle was decided. Jackson and Ringo did not suit up for the game, which is a good indication that they made the roster, but it's an even bigger indication that Jackson might have secured the starting job.
Overall, it has not been an excellent preseason for any of the cornerbacks who have played. Jackson has had some pleasant moments with open field tackles, but wasn't much of a factor in pass coverage. Ringo continuously got burned and missed tackles in games.
Looking at the latecomers to the position battle, Bennett had an uphill battle after being traded from the Las Vegas Raiders in the middle of training camp. He came up with good performances against the Cleveland Browns and Jets. McWilliams is developing and has also looked solid in preseason, but he's definitely bound to be a backup.
Jackson is going to hold the job, but it won't be a full time gig for him. DeJean is going to get reps at outside cornerback as well as in the nickel and at safety.
The reality is that none of the corners really earned that starting job, as Jackson won by default. It's a tough pill to swallow for Eagles fans, but Jackson is a veteran and should give more comfort entering the season.
Bennett could be a factor later in the season, so just because Jackson looks to be in line to start, he doesn't have that job forever in 2025.
