The Pittsburgh Steelers͏ made a bold ͏mo͏ve͏ in͏ the 2025 NFL͏ Draft by sel͏e͏cting Ohio State l͏inebacker Jack Sawyer͏ with the ͏123rd ͏overall pick ͏in͏ the fourth round. Though the t͏eam had other ͏pressing needs, bringing in Sawyer reflects a desi͏re to toughe͏n up defensively afte͏r a brutal playoff͏ loss to th͏e Raven͏s.

A second-te͏am All͏-͏Big Ten player, Sawyer had a͏ standout run ͏during O͏hio Sta͏te’s nation͏al title push in 2024.͏ His ͏mix of͏ p͏ower an d grit, with͏ ͏59 tackl͏es and ͏9 sacks in the previous season.

Fo͏rmer Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisbe͏rger was quick to share his exc͏itement abo͏ut ͏the pick o͏n his podcast. ͏

“͏It just f͏eel͏s right,”͏ Bi͏g Ben said. “It feels like a guy that͏ is going to ͏be a ͏S͏t͏eeler an͏d be͏ doing things the Stee͏ler way.͏”

H͏e acknowledged the risks in the draf͏t process but͏ added, “I͏n term͏s of where we͏ si͏t right now, really, r͏eally ͏lik͏e Jack͏ Sawyer pick.” Roethlisberger also noted his͏ e͏a͏ge͏rness t͏o see these players in action. “Th͏at’s͏ the hard thing with the draft… yo͏u get all these͏ gu͏ys and ͏have to wait to see.”

Sawyer ͏now j͏oins͏ a͏nother former Buckeye, qua͏rte͏rback Will Howard, who ͏als͏o recently signed ͏with th͏e Steelers. W͏hile͏ both played key roles for Oh͏io͏ ͏State͏, f͏ans are excited at ͏the possibility of seeing ͏them on͏ the field together in Pittsburgh. Sawye͏r’s mean streak and abili͏ty to disrupt in the backfield make him a prime ͏candi͏date for ͏ea͏rly ͏snaps,͏ especially on sp͏ecial teams͏.͏

͏With ͏depth concerns beh͏ind T.J. Watt and Alex Highsmi͏th, Saw͏yer’s arri͏val gives Pitts͏b͏urgh more than͏ just a backup, it ͏a͏dd͏s a potenti͏al future͏ star͏, br͏ed in Buckeye tou͏ghne͏ss a͏nd ready for the AFC North grind.

Multiple Vikings suffered injuries in preseason finale that could make a huge impact on 53-man roster while a disturbing trend continues

The preseason is the proving ground for young players, but it can be their worst nightmare at the same time. The final preseason game is the last chance for players to make a major impression on the coaching staff and front office. Unfortunately, for some players, they end up getting injured. That happened with multiple Minnesota Vikings in their 23-13 loss to the Tennessee Titans, and it could have a major impact on who makes the final 53-man roster at cutdown day. During the game, four Vikings ended up getting injured with different results. Those injuries could end up making things a little bit complicated for general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah. Minnesota Vikings injuries vs. Tennessee Titans EDGE Tyler Batty "Tyler Batty, pretty early there, you know, had a right knee that will evaluate via the MRI," said head coach Kevin O'Connell. Whenever you hear a coach say the player is going to have an MRI, it's usually not a good sign for them. Batty was not on a path to make the roster after an uninspiring preseason, and that could make it difficult for the Vikings to cut him, as you cannot cut an injured player without giving them an injury settlement. If the injury is serious, Batty will end up going on injured reserve. RB Zavier Scott Early on in the game, Scott suffered what O'Connell described as a right ankle injury. He didn't mention how severe it was, but he didn't return to the game after the injury. Scott finished the game with five carries for 28 yards, and has seemingly earned the RB3 job over Ty Chandler with his entire performance this year. DT Elijah Williams This is arguably the most difficult one of the group. During the beginning of the second half, Williams came up lame and ended up leaving the game. It's a brutal blow for Williams, as he's arguably had the best training camp of anyone with the Vikings. Could he end up like T.Y. McGill from a few years ago and not make the 53-man roster, but rather get an injury settlement? It's certainly possible, but if it's minor, Williams should be a near roster lock. QB Brett Rypien This one was the oddest of them all. Rypien was evaluated for a concussion after getting hit on the head, but it didn't draw a penalty. "Brett Rypien was evaluated for a concussion, but he returned," said O'Connell. "That was the play there, where, I believe the interception there, where, you know, he got hit in the head. It was enough to get evaluated for a concussion, but not enough to, you know, maybe draw a penalty on the play." It's wild that this happened once again, as the Vikings had that happen multiple times last season with Sam Darnold, and those ended up giving their opponents nine points. Thankfully, Rypien ended up being okay, but it's baffling how officials continue to miss it.

Cowboys' Micah Parsons seen taking bizarre action in preseason finale

Micah Parsons showed up for the Dallas Cowboys' preseason finale against the Atlanta Falcons in body only. The star pass-rusher showed no spirit and did not dress amid his hold-in for a contract extension. On Thursday, Parsons scrubbed the Cowboys from his social media feed. During Friday's game, he couldn't be bothered to be with his teammates on the sideline watching the whole game. Per a photo posted on X by The Athletic's Jon Machota, Parsons was seen lying down on a trainer's table during the contest. Parsons' actions come amid a turbulent week between his representation and Cowboys owner Jerry Jones. In separate interviews, Jones told both Michael Irvin and ESPN's Stephen A. Smith that he did not plan to back down from his agreement with Parsons to work with agent David Mulugheta. During the pregame show on Friday, Jones boasted to 105.3 The Fan that defensive end is where the Cowboys have the most depth on the roster. "Frankly, our defensive ends may be the best depth, where we have the most talent of any position on the field," Jones said via Machota. "I'm excited about our depth and our numbers at pass rusher. ... I'm concerned because of having space on the roster to keep that many of our guys that have pass rushing ability." Following Friday night's game, the Cowboys' preseason is over. The situation between Jones and Parsons is not ideal for first-year head coach Brian Schottenheimer, who is tasked with trimming the roster to 53 players by Tuesday. If Parsons is traded or chooses not to play in Week 1, Schottenheimer is going to have to decide to take away depth from what Jones sees as a weaker part of the team to boost a unit that is without their best player because he won't negotiate with Mulugheta.

Pat McAfee has strong reaction to Hall of Fame honor

Former punter Pat McAfee is receiving an honor that is rare for a special teams member. On Friday, West Virginia announced that McAfee was one of six players entering the program's Hall of Fame for the 2025 class. McAfee is thankful for the recognition from his former school. He used some strong language to react to WVU's reveal. "It was nice to have an opportunity to think back and reminisce about a great era of my life," McAfee posted on X. "I am so thankful for the recognition. This is normally something I would try and f------ hate.. I’d say that it’s b------- and they feel obligated to do this but; this call made my soul feel good. Thanks for the opportunity to be a Mountaineer @RealCoachRod.. it was an honor." McAfee was a highly productive specialist at West Virginia, earning First-team All-American honors in 2008. During his time with the Mountaineers, he set the school record for most games played (51), scoring (384) and extra points made (210). He held the Big East record for most extra points made, when he made 210 of 212 attempts. McAfee's success at West Virginia propelled the Indianapolis Colts to select him in the seventh round of the 2009 draft. He earned All-Pro honors in 2014 and made the Pro Bowl in 2014 and 2016. He has the highest career net average in punting years with 41.1. McAfee should be proud of his achievements during his days in college and the legacy he is building with the program. The ESPN pundit even used his influence to speak with WVU athletic director Wren Baker to help with the coaching search that ultimately brought back Rich Rodriguez to the school.

Why Blue Jays’ contender status may ride on Shane Bieber

Three weeks after the Toronto Blue Jays acquired him from the Cleveland Guardians at the MLB trade deadline, Shane Bieber made his long-awaited return to the mound on Friday. A durable arm throughout the first six years of his professional career, Bieber hasn't pitched in the majors since undergoing Tommy John surgery in April 2024. Once the ace of Cleveland's rotation, Bieber will now be tasked with helping a title-hopeful Toronto squad to championship glory. It's hard to predict whether the 30-year-old is capable of returning to the Cy Young-caliber pitcher he was from 2020 to 2022. But with how the Jays' rotation has performed this season, the franchise will have to hope he gets close to that level. Toronto's rotation certainly isn't lacking in big names. With Bieber now in the fold, the Blue Jays are filled to the brim with accomplished pitchers. Kevin Gausman, Chris Bassitt and Jose Berrios are all former All-Stars. Meanwhile, Max Scherzer is a three-time Cy Young winner and future Hall of Famer. Outside of the 41-year-old Scherzer, though, Toronto's star-studded rotation hasn't lived up to expectations. Gausman has failed to replicate his first season with the Jays, when he posted a 3.16 ERA and led the league with 237 strikeouts. He hasn't been the ace the Jays need in 2025, currently possessing a 3.78 ERA as his strikeout numbers continue to drop. Bassitt, too, has been unable to reclaim his 2023 form, when he led the AL in wins and served as a reliable mid-rotation starter. He's been unable to keep his ERA under four and currently leads all pitchers in hits allowed. Berrios has suffered the worst drop-off in 2025 after posting a respectable 3.60 ERA in 2024. While never a star, the Jays have to be disheartened by Berrios' 4.00 ERA after back-to-back solid campaigns. With 2022 Cy Young candidate Alek Manoah still struggling to find his footing in the pitch-clock era, though, it appears this is the five starting arms Toronto will have for its stretch run. The Blue Jays have bounced back admirably after a disappointing 74-88 season in 2024. But Toronto's current 74-54 record is largely thanks to the team's top-tier offense. If Toronto manages to claim its first World Series title since 1993, it will be thanks to the pitching staff finally matching the power of its offense. Whether the rotation can rise to the occasion remains to be seen, but Bieber’s upcoming start against the Miami Marlins could offer an early hint.
