George Karl is a big fan of JuJu Watkins.
The All-American sophomore has led USC to a 10-1 start with elite play on both ends. After finishing second to Caitlin Clark in scoring last season, Watkins is averaging 24.7 points, 5.8 rebounds, 3.7 assists, 2.5 steals, and 1.9 blocks per game.
Karl gave Watkins high praise on Tuesday. The Hall of Fame head coach, who won 1,175 NBA games in 27 seasons, compared her favorably to Clark.
"As good as Caitlin Clark is, I'm thinking Juju Watkins may even be better," Karl wrote on social media. "She looks to have the size, athleticism and talent to even compete in the NBA at some level!"
Karl didn't specify if he was comparing Watkins to Clark now or as a college player. The former Iowa star averaged 27.0 points, 8.0 assists, and 8.0 rebounds as a sophomore before winning Player of the Year in back-to-back seasons.
Clark then led the WNBA in assists in an explosive Rookie of the Year campaign with the Indiana Fever. With the NCAA's all-time leading scorer playing professionally, Watkins is one of college basketball's brightest stars vying for the vacated spotlight.
Earlier this month, Watkins reached 30 points in a game for the 16th time. The Athletic noted that only Clark hit that milestone more often (23) through her sophomore year.
Comparing Watkins and Clark is probably unfair to both players. Watkins isn't the same type of floor general who will lead an uptempo offense with frequent pinpoint passes and logo threes, but she's also a superior defender.
Both players could forge exceptional careers with entirely different skill sets.
When she leaves college, Watkins could follow Clark's path as a No. 1 pick capable of igniting a WNBA franchise. The 19-year-old will first encounter next year's presumptive top selection this weekend.
Watkins can measure herself against another superstar guard when facing Paige Bueckers in an Elite Eight rematch against UConn on Saturday. FOX will broadcast the marquee matchup at 8 p.m. ET.
