Former Tennessee Vols QB Joe Milton is making an early statement this summer after getting traded to the Dallas Cowboys

Former Tennessee Vols quarterback Joe Milton has always had the physical tools to be an elite player at the highest level, but he's never quite managed to put it all together.

We saw glimpses, however, of how good Milton can be in the NFL during his lone start as a rookie with the New England Patriots last season.

Milton led the Patriots to a 23-16 win against the Buffalo Bills in the final week of the regular season. The former Vol passed for 241 yards and a touchdown, while also rushing for 16 yards and a touchdown, in the win against Buffalo.

With the Patriots committed to Drake Maye at quarterback, Milton was traded to the Dallas Cowboys earlier this offseason (New England signed veteran quarterback Josh Dobbs to serve as the backup to Maye).

So far this offseason, Milton looks like a player ready to deliver on the elite potential that coaches like Jim Harbaugh and Josh Heupel saw in him during his college career.

Milton is off to a blistering start in OTAs, looking sharp and accurate during throwing sessions -- which is already leading to some Cowboys fans wondering if the Florida native can give Dallas starting quarterback Dak Prescott a run for his money.

Milton is putting in the work in Dallas, showing up early, leaving late, and soaking up all the knowledge he can from the veterans around him.

"He's one of the first people in the building," said Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer of Milton. "He's one of the last to leave. The way he's attacked the playbook and how he's picking it up is incredible, and it's been fun for me to watch Dak and Will [Grier] take a mentorship role with Joe."

Milton knows you only get so many chances in the NFL to be a starter. For now, he's firmly behind Prescott on the depth chart, and that likely won't change unless there's an injury, but it's clear the former Vol is staying ready. He'll eventually get a chance to prove he can be a starter in the NFL.

And when he gets that chance, maybe we'll finally see a Joe Milton that's clicking on all cylinders.
