From in-ring talent to WWE’s Chief Content Officer, Triple H is one of the brightest minds in wrestling, but he apparently never understood Carlito’s character.
Carlito made his main roster WWE debut in October 2004, spending six years with the company before an initial release in 2010.
He then made a second full-time return in 2023, at which point Triple H was overseeing the company’s creative.
But the now former WWE talent has suggested that he was never really one of Triple H’s favourites.
Speaking about Triple H on the Chris Van Vliet podcast this week, he said: “Yeah, I don’t know because I’ve never been Hunter’s [Triple H’s] favourite.
“I don’t think he gets Carlito, or the character, so it is what it is. Yeah, but like I said, man, I was gonna make whatever I did work. So luckily Judgment Day came by, and that was fun for me.”
After enjoying a brief run back in the company, primarily as a member of the Judgment Day, Carlito left once again in June 2025.
His contract was up at the time, and WWE decided against offering him a new deal.
But Carlito has now admitted he could have been with the company for another year had he accepted their initial three-year contract.
He said: “They [WWE] could have renewed it, but I never went to them, they never came to me, so we never spoke or anything, so I just was ready for whatever. Yeah, so I kind of shot myself in the foot, because I signed the shorter deal than the usual. So I guess I bet against myself, I think.
“I signed for two years, they wanted me for three years, and I signed for two. I didn’t think it was gonna go as good as it did, so that’s why I said I bet against myself. I would have got an extra year, and then my contract would have expired. So I ended up losing a year, but that’s alright.”
Now 47, Carlito remains an active wrestler and is due to compete at an event in Italy the day before WWE host their latest PLE, Clash In Italy.
The IWS are set to put on ‘The American Wrestling Showdown’ in Turin on May 30, with Carlito among the notable names announced for the show.
However, while he remains active on the independent circuit, he also admitted to Chris Van Vliet that he has a timescale in mind for when he will hang up his boots.
Carlito said: “The WWE run helped out a lot with that, with the retirement plan. So, yeah, couple more years, and then I can ride off into the sunset.”
Asked specifically how many years he has left wrestling, he continued: “Five-ish should be the goal. Or my body might say, ‘Hey, bro,’ but right now it’s been pretty good.”
