One of the most beloved sitcoms, ‘Friends‘ showed almost all of its lead characters in relationships throughout the show. But other than the primary relationships, these characters also had secondary relationships at different points in time with other people. Some such rather popular pairings include Chandler and Janice, Phoebe and David, and Ross and Emily among others.
Dabid Scheimmer’s character Ross Geller had a rather complicated romantic life throughout the show. Though he ended up with his childhood dreamgirl Rachel Greene, he got married four times (twice with Rachel alone). Emily was one of the characters he got married to but then got separated because of his complicated history with Rachel. But what would have happened had they stayed married?
It’s rather interesting to wonder what would have happened had Ross not said Rachel’s name instead of Emily’s at the altar. Needless to say, Ross would have been happily married to Emily, and therefore wouldn’t have married Rachel at the end of season 5 while they both were drunk in Vegas. That would mean that they wouldn’t have to end their marriage — and that Ross wouldn’t have three divorces under his belt at such a young age.
Though she was a little high-strung, before this mishap on their wedding day, Ross and Emily’s relationship seemed pretty promising. They did rush things but Ross was always looking to settle down with someone. They would have easily lived happily ever after and Rachel would have moved on from, but the series would have been dull after that.
But Ross and Rachel were meant to be. He messed up his wedding vows with Emily by saying Rachel’s name instead of Emily’s name. Their relationship wasn’t the same throughout the seasons as it had various ups and downs, but they were somehow brought together.
There were many reasons why Ross and Rachel weren’t meant to be together, including cheating, trust issues, jealousy, and miscommunication. So it made complete sense why Ross went with Emily. But he still had that soft corner for Rachel.
Ross always went the extra mile to see her happy and was selfless in her case despite his tendency to make wrong decisions. Moreover, Rachel was friends with everyone and had a connection with the group.
Had Ross stayed married to Emily, there’s a high chance he would have grown apart from his friend group. All in all, it would not exactly be wrong to say that the two were made for each other.
