Georgia Bulldogs football appears to make a change to their coaching staff ahead of SEC media days
Joshua L. Jones-USA TODAY NETWORK

The Georgia Bulldogs have made a change to their coaching staff for the 2025 college football season.

According to Marc Weiszer of the Athens Banner-Herald, it looks like defensive analyst Will Muschamp will not be with the team this fall after Muschamp's name did not appear in Georgia's updated media guide.

"Georgia football updated its football support staffers in its new media guide released ahead of SEC Media Days in Atlanta. Will Muschamp, the former Florida and South Carolina coach, is no longer listed on there," Weiszer reported.

"That’s not a big surprise considering the former Bulldog safety had a scaled back role last season to spend more time with his family and be with his son during his freshman year as a Vanderbilt quarterback."

Muschamp, 53, served in multiple roles under Smart from 2021 to 2024, joining the program after a five-year stint as South Carolina’s head coach.

He initially came aboard as an analyst but quickly stepped in as the team's special teams coordinator when Scott Cochran took a leave of absence. Muschamp then transitioned into a co-defensive coordinator and a safeties coach role for the 2022 and 2023 seasons before returning to an off-field analyst position last year. During that time, Muschamp was involved in week-to-week behind-the-scenes work but was not with the team on game days.

Whether this marks the beginning of retirement or just a pause in his coaching career remains unclear. But there's no doubt he will enjoy watching his youngest son, Whit, continue the start of his college football career as a redshirt freshman quarterback at Vanderbilt.

We'll see what coach Smart has to say about Muschamp and what's next for that potential vacant coaching spot when the Bulldogs arrive at SEC Media Days in Atlanta on Tuesday, July 15.
