Australian cricket player Glenn Maxwell announced his retirement from One Day International (ODI) cricket on his Instagram account. He made his ODI debut on August 25, 2012, against Afghanistan.
In an interview with Adam Collins, he revealed that the leg injury in 2022 affected his performance and made him feel he was disappointing the team. Maxwell also expressed his desire to focus on Twenty20 cricket and aims to contribute to Australia’s success in the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup in 2026.
In a conversation with George Bailey, Maxwell stated that he wanted to give upcoming players a chance to prepare for future competitions, saying, "It's time to start planning for people in my position to have a crack at it and make the position their own. I didn’t want to hold on for a couple of series and almost play for selfish reasons."
During his ODI career, Maxwell played 149 matches, scored 3,990 runs at a strike rate of 126.70, and recorded a career-best 201 against Afghanistan in the 2023 World Cup.
Maxwell shared a message on his Instagram story: “Thanks for all the messages over the last few days. I am still trying to get back to everyone, so I apologize. It's been truly overwhelming, the amount of love and support that has been sent and shared.”
He concluded with optimism: "I’m extremely grateful. I’m looking forward to the next little period and pushing towards next year’s T20 World Cup. Hopefully, there are a few more memories to be created. The ride’s not over yet.”
