The Golden State Warriors have tried to trade for Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James “on multiple occasions,” according to NBA insider Jake Fischer of The Stein Line.
James is friends with Warriors legends Stephen Curry and Draymond Green . Curry and James were teammates last summer on Team USA, coached by Steve Kerr.
“I’m told that the Warriors have called the Lakers on multiple occasions over the past 18 months to see whether there is any trade pathway to pairing LeBron James with Stephen Curry, who roughly a year ago at this time was teaming with LeBron for the United States senior men’s national team on its run to a gold medal at the Paris Olympics,” Fischer wrote. “After all those NBA Finals clashes. James and Curry were said to greatly enjoy their experience as teammates on the international stage … with Golden State’s Steve Kerr, of course, se rving as their Olympic coach.”
James has a no-trade clause in his contract. He will make $52.6 million next season in the final year of his contract with the Los Angeles Lakers.
The leading scorer in NBA history, James is expected to remain with the Lakers, who have Luka Dončić and James’ son, Bronny James.
A four-time MVP and four-time Finals MVP, James has been with the Lakers since 2018. He guided the franchise to the 2020 championship against his former team, the Miami Heat, at the Walt Disney World bubble.
A four-time champion, James has played for the Cleveland Cavaliers (twice), Heat and Lakers. He enters next season with career averages of 27.0 points, 7.5 rebounds, 7.4 assists, 1.5 steals and 0.7 blocks. The basketball legend is the only player in NBA history to rank top five all-time in points and assists.
The Warriors haven’t made any moves this offseason because of Jonathan Kuminga‘s restricted free agency. Curry and Co. lost to the Minnesota Timberwolves in the second round of the 2025 playoffs. The Timberwolves beat James’ Lakers in the first round.
