Climbing Seven Summit Mt. Vinson

Climbing Mt. Vinson is not for the faint of heart! The frigid mountain is the most prominent feature of the remote and icy landscape of Antarctica, located in the Ellsworth Mountain Range. Standing 16,050 ft. above sea level, it is the highest peak in Antarctica, making it one of the coveted and iconic Seven Summits - the highest peaks on each of the seven continents.

Climbers wishing to complete the Seven Summits have to go to Antarctica and endure temperatures that range from around -4°F to -40°F, which is a frightening range! And this is during the Antarctic Summer - the climbing season, which runs from November through February.

To get to this summer (winter) wonderland, climbers depart for the 'ice' from the southern tip of Chile in Punta Arenas, and land at Union Glacier Camp.  From this desolate, icy frontier, these adventurers depart on a ski-equipped small plane to Mt. Vinson Base Camp.  From Base Camp, they are on their own - literally, until the plane makes it back to Base after the climb.

Climbing season is wrapping up on this Seven Summit, after many successful stories and summits.  It was a good year!
