Here’s How Paige Bueckers Uses Stephen Curry as a Blueprint for Success

Steph Curry is widely viewed as the greatest shooter in NBA history. But according to Paige Bueckers, there is another part of Curry’s game where the Golden State Warriors guard might be even more elite.

Last year, Bueckers topped the WNBA with a 13% Gravity rating. That means she attracted 13% more defensive attention than the average player in the league. Now, after a narrow 90-86 loss to the Minnesota Lynx, Bueckers revealed the method behind developing that part of her game.

“Being able to get off, being able to be a screener. I mean, if you watch Steph Curry, he’s probably the best screener in the NBA,” the Dallas star guard told Melissa Triebwasser of The IX Sports.

“He has the best gravity in the NBA, so it’s a sort of mimic after him and his off-ball movement is off-ball screening and selflessness. I’ve actually learned from that.”

The four-time NBA champion, Curry, is considered one of the best screeners in the league, especially for his off-ball screens. He forces defenders to react to his movement, opening up lanes for teammates to score.

With increased gravity, Curry often finds innovative screens, which Bueckers has picked up on.

Defenders focus heavily on Bueckers due to her scoring efficiency. Even though she is not a high-volume shooter, she remains one of the most efficient scorers in the league.

Last season, she shot 47.7% from the field despite facing constant defensive pressure. That percentage was the best among guards averaging at least 15 points per game.

But Paige Bueckers can’t solve everything alone. The formula only works if the entire Dallas Wings roster buys into it, too. And right now, according to the head coach, that part is still missing.

Dallas Wings Coach Calls Out ‘Selfishness’ After Tough Loss

The Wings were close to beating the Minnesota Lynx in their recent rematch.

At one point, Dallas held a 12-point lead and looked ready to secure another win. But everything changed late as the defense struggled, and Olivia Miles took control of the game. After the loss, head coach Jose Fernandez did not hold back.

“It’s real talk, and it’s accountability. That’s what I told them. I go, ‘There’s selfishness in this locker room.’”

Even so, Paige Bueckers believes the team’s problems can be corrected quickly.

“I think most, if not all of our mistakes and miscommunication are fixable,” Bueckers said via DallasHoopsJournal. “We saw that in film, we saw that during the game.”

Still, some early-season struggles were always expected. The Wings added several new faces, including Alanna Smith and Jessica Shepherd. They also brought in new coaching staff.
