Historic College Football Program Named Most Overrated Team In Updated CFP Rankings

When the updated College Football Playoff rankings were released on Tuesday, it stirred a lot of discussions. Some fans were puzzled as to Penn State's landing spot at No. 4.

Others questioned the ranking of SMU and BYU despite the head-to-head results earlier in the seasons.

Tennessee fans also caused an uproar for the Vols' No. 11 ranking. Another team that raised eyebrows was Notre Dame, who landed at No. 6 in the new rankings.

After the rankings were released, Kyle Wood of Athlon Sports named three overrated teams from the most recent set of rankings, and he had Notre Dame on the list.

"The highlight and lowlight of the Irish’s season came in its first two weeks: A 23-13 win over Texas A&M on the road and a disastrous 16-14 home loss to Northern Illinois," Wood wrote about Notre Dame. "Of the one-loss teams in the top 25, the Fighting Irish have one of the best wins and easily the worst loss. That’s what gives one pause at Notre Dame’s continued ascent."

Wood mentions Notre Dame's stunning upset loss to Northern Illinois in Week 2 in South Bend, which is the only loss of the year.

"The Fighting Irish fell precipitously in the AP Top 25 when that upset occurred, from No. 5 to No. 18, but that was months before the first CFP rankings were released," Wood continued. "Its toughest remaining task — and likely only true obstacle to earning an at-large playoff bid — is on deck Saturday against undefeated Army."

Notre Dame's schedule has been relatively light, although the Week 1 win over Texas A&M in College Station holds a lot of weight. Since then, Notre Dame has wins over Louisville, Georgia Tech, and Navy.

While Notre Dame is currently in the overrated category, a win over No. 19 Army and against USC on the road would give them two key wins to round out the season and essentially lock their spot into the College Football Playoff.
