The 34th edition of the Africa Cup of Nations features six groups of four teams and will run from January 13 to February 11. It is hosted by Ivory Coast, marking the second time they have hosted the tournament and the first since 1984.
Mali has had noteworthy performances in the past decade, securing third place in the 2012 and 2013 editions. However, their best result was a runner-up finish in 1972. The current scenario doesn’t place the Malians among the top contenders for glory in Ivory Coast, but a strong debut against South Africa could position them favorably for the subsequent stages.
The African national team is eager to reclaim the spotlight, a feat they haven’t achieved since their loss in the 1998 edition’s final. That defeat marked an unsuccessful attempt to secure the runner-up position, especially after South Africa had clinched the Africa Cup of Nations title in 1996.
To kick off their campaign in the best possible manner, the South Africans must overcome Mali in their Group E debut. Namibia has already claimed victory in this group with their triumph over Tunisia.
