Amid the absence of Caitlin Clark due to injury, All-Star guard Kelsey Mitchell has stepped up to pick up the scoring load and share of playmaking duties for the Indiana Fever. As it stands, Mitchell leads Indiana in scoring with 20.6 points per game, along with 3.4 assists.

In their previous game against the Connecticut Sun, Mitchell exploded for 38 points to propel the Fever to a 99-93 victory in overtime after trailing by as many as 21 points.

Against the Minnesota Lynx on Friday, Mitchell dropped a team-high 27 points on 9-of-20 shooting along with five assists. Despite the 95-90 loss, Mitchell brought firepower and made sure Indiana was able to put up a fight.

Kelsey Mitchell for MVP? Fever Players Think So!

Prior to the showdown with the Lynx, Caitlin Clark and the rest of the Fever showed their appreciation for Mitchell by wearing "MVP MITCHELL" shirts.

Mitchell was admittedly surprised by the gesture, saying that she "was taken aback." However, she also couldn't help but get emotional with the show of love and support from her teammates, adding that she really felt valued.

"I was very humbled," Mitchell added. "I was grateful for my group. I love the people I play with and to know that they would go out their way to make something like that happen for me, it means a lot more than people know because I have been here the longest."

The 29-year-old guard further stated, "Everything that people talk about, I have been and to know that my teammates kind of like see me as, you know, I have value somewhere and I feel like they make me feel like I'm important to them and vice versa."

Mitchell also highlighted how much she appreciated the move by saying that she is "going to forever look at" her teammates "like forever friends."

Does Kelsey Mitchell Have a Case to Win WNBA MVP?

Mitchell is currently third in per game scoring, only behind Napheesa Collier (23.5) and A'ja Wilson (22.8). She's second in total poin ts with 740 through 36 games, behind Wilson's 753 points.

As the Fever's most important player amid all their injury woes, Mitchell certainly deserves to be in the conversation for the MVP award.

Unfortunately, that's not the case, with the odds favoring Collier (-250), Wilson (+195) and Alyssa Thomas (+1900) to win.

Considering that the Fever have only eight games remaining, it's hard to see Mitchell making a late surge and joining the MVP debate for the 2025 season despite all the work she has put in.
