Iga Swiatek continues sublime form, breezes into US Open second round in just an hour

Iga Swiatek often wants the earlier session at Grand Slams and you can see why given the way she flies through them. She has got about her business in just over an hour at the US Open on Tuesday.

Swiatek was facing off against Emiliana Arango, the Colombian ace but it was very much from gun to tape for the Pole as the 2022 US Open champion found her way through succinctly into the second round 6-1, 6-2.

She snapped a 13-month title drought in July by capturing her first Wimbledon title. It was her six Grand Slam and she won Cincinnati just last week as she backed that up after a poor loss to Clara Tauson in Canada. But she proved that it was a mere blip in getting ready for the latter stages of the season.

Having fallen to World No.8 in June, she has already returned to World No.2 this week and has also broken a world record. That of Monica Seles after having 65 wins in opening matches in the open era. She also showed her domination by losing just three points all match on her first serve.

She took an early break at 3-1 as errors started to creep into the game of Arango. She recovered from 30-0 down to take an impressive hold at a point where she had already sealed seven winners. This proved the catalyst for a double break before she took the first set in a mere 27 minutes. She was a set and a break up after the first game and she continued to hoist that advantage.

Arango tried her hardest to fight holding serve for 3-2 but it only served as a stockgap for Swiatek to find her way through and take an impressive win. She moved 5-2 in front with a superb forehand and then she held serve to 15 within the space of just one hour.

Afterwards she also lauded the Polish fans for their role in the victory and also continuing to come back time after time to support her over the years and that it continues to be more and more of a feature of her games now.

“Yeah, Polish fans are kind of everywhere. It’s super nice to feel the support always. They’re coming kind of around the world too, every place I play. It’s great, but I also really appreciate people that come from different countries. I feel every year it’s more. I just hope they’ll enjoy my game," she said.
