Inside the 2027 Penn State Football Recruiting CB Shakeup: Robinson Out, Gleason Wavering, and Texas Target Dhillon McGee Arrives

Penn State Football and first-year Head Coach Matt Campbell hosted their first big official visits weekend, and were riding high coming into this week with multiple crystal ball predictions being placed.

Two commitments followed, and momentum was at an all-time high, but the last few days have been sobering for the entire Nittany Lions staff.

A group once packed with talent is now looking thin, adding another position needing some work before National Signing Day arrives.

Slipped Grip: How Penn State’s Defensive Back Momentum Evaporated in 48 Hours

Just a week ago, cornerbacks coach Terry Smith had four players committed to the program, yet offers kept going out to athletes playing the same position and visits were kept on the schedule. We now know why.

First came 3-star Semajay Robinson out of South Florida, no longer being part of the class.

Industry folks are saying it was Penn State‘s choice and the decision wasn’t about NIL.

NittanyCentral caught up with Robinson, and he disagreed.

“I chose Virginia because they’ve been real since day one,” Robinson tells NittanyCentral. “And it was a better business decision and career for me. Not because Penn State let me go or anything like that. They love me, and it’s always love for them, but I’ll remain at Virginia. Everything on the internet is not the real story.”

Whether he was removed or decided to leave the class, Robinson will not be a part of Penn State’s future.

Zachary Gleason to West Virginia? LeSean McCoy Confirms Mountaineers’ Aggressive NIL Push

As NittanyCentral previously reported, 3-star cornerback Zachary Gleason is a real risk of flipping to West Virginia.

Gleason’s agent spoke with NittanyCentral and made it clear that his client wants to be a part of Penn State, but the door is definitely open if the Mountaineers decide to be aggressive, and that’s exactly what happened Wednesday morning.

First, 247’s Brian Dohn put in a crystal ball for WVU, and then NittanyCentral reached out to Gleason’s representation, confirming the buzz.

“They just want him more, to be honest,” LeSean McCoy, Gleason’s agent, told NittanyCentral. “I have been on the phone with them all day.”

McCoy did, though, reveal that it’s not completely a done deal, but after further digging into the situation, NittanyCentral has found out that the NIL package West Virginia is offering is considerably more than Penn State’s offer.

Considering that, Dohn’s crystal ball, and the comments from Gleason’s agent, it seems like it is only a matter of time before the Central Catholic product flips and makes it official.

As unpleasant as it sounds, this news couldn’t have come at a better time.

Enter Dhillon McGee: The 6-foot-1 Lone Star Hammer Built for Terry Smith’s Scheme

Although only four players are visiting Penn State’s campus this weekend, this is about quality over quantity.

One of those players making the trip up to Pennsylvania is Texas 3-star cornerback Dhillon McGee.

McGee has everything you want from a boundary cornerback. Long arms, quick feet, and exceptional ball skills. McGee recorded 15 pass breakups last season while starting at Red Oak HS in Desoto Texas.

Remember, this visit wasn’t just set up before the news of Robinson and now Gleason not being a part of the 2027 class.

Smith has been on the hunt for McGee for a while now, and that has never swayed.

NittanyCentral recently talked with McGee, and his camp, and it certainly sounds like the feelings are mutual.

“I’m looking forward to coming up to Penn State and spending time with Coach Drop and Coach Smith,” McGee tells NittanyCentral. “They showed a lot of love last time I was there.”

At 6-foot-1 and 180 pounds, McGee enjoys playing just as you’d expect him to after watching his tape.

“Fast and physical,” McGee said when asked what his play style resembles.

Distance Defied: The McGee Family Clears the Path for a Happy Valley Commitment

The most crucial hurdle when recruiting a player who would be far from home is just that. Providing comfort to not only to the player but also to his family.

It doesn’t sound as though that will be any issue at all for the McGees, when it comes to considering Penn State.

“This is something I have talked about with my parents,” McGee says. “And I would be comfortable at any school no matter how far away.”

This same sentiment was echoed by Dhillon’s father Dameon, who spoke with NittanyCentral about his admiration for Smith.

“Coach Terry has built a relationship,” Dameon McGee tells NittanyCentral. “And we trust him. We would like to see their plan to develop him (Dhillon) and how he fits into the schemes. After they paint the picture, we will consider all three visions, then make a decision June 22nd.”

The same opinion, like father like son, about the distance as well.

“We don’t mind him playing at Penn State for the next 3 to 4 years,” McGee explained. “I actually encourage it.”
