Iowa State Lands New Jersey DB Josiah Zayas, Adds Versatility to 2026 Class

Iowa State added a dynamic playmaker to its 2026 class with the commitment of three‑star athlete Josiah Zayas, a 6‑foot‑2, 200‑pound standout from St. Thomas Aquinas (Edison, NJ).

Zayas, who had previously committed to Syracuse before flipping earlier today, chose the Cyclones following an official visit in June. He picked ISU over other schools like Wisconsin, East Carolina, and others, signaling a strong connection to the program and its vision.

This particular recruit has upside written all over him. In 2024, he exploded onto the scene, registering 1,065 receiving yards, 16 touchdowns on offense, and adding 33 tackles with seven interceptions on defense.

It’s clear Iowa State pitching him as a cornerback under coach Hank Poteat isn’t just lip service; it fills a current need. The Cyclones do not have a cornerback commit yet in the 2026 class, and Zayas fits that mold perfectly.

His film shows off strong instincts, ball skills, and the ability to become a lockdown defender. At the same time, that offensive production tells you he’s comfortable in space, can attack the ball, and isn’t afraid to mix it up, exactly what coach Matt Campbell values in his secondary.

Zayas becomes the 18th member of Iowa State’s 2026 class and a key piece for the kind of balanced roster the program is assembling for next season. His flip away from Syracuse suggests the Cyclones’ rising reputation is paying dividends on the recruiting trail.
