JASON BEAN/RGJ / USA TODAY NETWORK

Belgium's Jasper Philipsen sprinted to victory in the opening stage of the 112th Tour de France on Saturday.

It was the 27-year-old Alpecin-Deceuninck cyclist's 10th career stage win but the first time he has captured the race leader's yellow jersey.

Philipsen completed the mostly flat 184.9-kilometer loop around Lille Metropole just ahead of Eritrea's Biniam Girmay and Soren Waerenskjold of Norway.

Defending champion Tadej Pogacar of Slovenia finished in 18th place and two-time winner Jonas Vingegaard of Denmark was 20th.

The Tour de France resumes Sunday with Stage 2, a hilly 209.1-kilometer trek from Lauwin-Planque to Boulogne-Sur-Mer.
