New York Jets rookie Armand Membou will be a very rich man before he ever plays a snap in the NFL, and he says he had no idea how much money he was going to make until he signed his first contract.

The Jets drafted Membou, an offensive lineman out of Missouri, with the No. 7 overall pick. That slot comes with a 4-year, $31.8 million contract that is fully guaranteed. Membou will receive a $19.8 million signing bonus as part of the deal.

Membou spoke with the media on Thursday, and he was asked what the experience was like when he signed his contract the day before. The 21-year-old had a wholesome reaction.

“It was pretty cool, especially once I looked at all them zeroes on the page. I didn’t realize how much money I was getting, but it’s definitely a blessing for sure,” Membou said.

Membou had to have known he would make millions by being drafted in the first round, but it is entirely possible that he was unfamiliar with the details of the rookie wage scale. By being selected in the top 10, his first contract will pay him more money than most players make in their entire careers.

There will be a lot of pressure on Membou to help fix an offensive line that has been a major issue over the past few years in New York. He’s going to have to work hard to live up to all of those zeroes.
