Heading into Monday's draft lottery, a plethora of teams hoped for luck to fall their way in what many expect to be a loaded class. Months removed from the most shocking blockbuster in league history, the Dallas Mavericks ended up being the biggest winners of the night.
Despite entering the night with just a 1.8% chance at landing the top pick, the Mavericks managed to do the improbable. They'll now select first on draft night, likely taking Cooper Flagg with the pick.
Flagg now finds himself in an interesting position heading into his NBA career. Instead of being the face of a rebuild, he's going to a team that isn't far removed from appearing in the finals.

When the Mavericks traded Luka Doncic back in February, Anthony Davis was the key piece of the return package. Upon winning the lottery, Dallas now has a power forward prospect to pair alongside him for the foreseeable future.
In terms of fit, the Mavericks will now have arguably the most versatile frontcourt in the league. Davis and Flagg can do just about everything on the basketball court and pride themselves on being two-way talents. Given the ground they can cover on the floor, the Mavs have a chance to have one of the league's best defenses moving forward.
Landing Flagg also gives Dallas another athletic pick-and-roll partner for Kyrie Irving when he returns from injury. The All-Star guard is someone who should make life easier for the potential No. 1 pick when it comes to generating offensive looks.
One thing Dallas will have to worry about with the addition of Flagg is spacing. He and AD are capable of expanding beyond the arc, but neither is exactly reliable when it comes to three-point shooting. Flagg is sure to develop this part of his game in the NBA, but in the meantime, Dallas will have to prioritize floor spacing when building out the rest of the roster.
On the Mavs, Flagg will have the chance to be a roamer on defense with AD behind him while being a menace in transition. Though the team is farther along in terms of roster construction, he'll still have big shoes to fill. Fans will now cling to him as the face of the franchise following Doncic's departure.
