There's no doubt that at just 29 years old, Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes already left a permanent mark on the NFL, winning two MVP Awards and three Super Bowls.
Before that, though, he first started making waves as a member of the Texas Tech Raiders, where he played from 2014 to 2016, appearing in 32 games, completing 857-of-1,349 passes for 11,252 yards, 93 touchdowns and 29 interceptions.
It's clear that his former college still holds a special place in his heart, and in a video posted to "The Triple Option" YouTube channel, current head coach Joey McGuire revealed some of Mahomes' impact on the program.
"I will text him and say, 'Hey, man, I'm gonna have so and so on campus, you know, let's say he's a quarterback in 2026. Tell me a time that I can get on the phone with you and you can just say hello,' I think he probably sleeps in a double T every night," McGuire said.
"Like he is just all the freaking in on Texas Tech. And he'll tell you, man, he literally says, 'I am who I am because I came to Lubbock and I'm a Red Raider.' Our walkthrough room is a Patrick Mahomes walkthrough room. You know, our quarterback's meeting room is the Patrick Mahomes, you know, quarterback's meeting room."
Of course, being one of the best players to come out of Texas Tech isn't the only reason he's so highly appreciated, because last August, Mahomes and his wife made a $5 million donation to the team's football upgrades.
Even if his role in the team's recruiting process is small, it's no surprise to see the team bringing in high-level players, as their 2026 class currently has 18 commitments, ranking No. 1 in the Big 12 and No. 22 in the nation.
That includes five-star offensive tackle Felix Ojo, who ESPN's Eli Liderman reported earned a fully guaranteed three-year, $5.1 million NIL deal.
Now, after recording four straight winning seasons dating back to 2021, Texas Tech faces some relatively high expectations going into next season, as ESPN BET ties them for the fourth-best odds to win the Big 12.
