The baseball gods have spoken, and they are demanding more strikeouts. Enter Jonah Tong, the Mets’ pitching phenom who’s about to trade his Triple-A uniform for the bright lights of Queens. After absolutely demolishing minor league hitters like a kid playing a video game, he is getting his shot at the big leagues this Friday against the Miami Marlins.

Tong’s Meteoric Rise Through the Mets System

Most seventh-round draft picks end up selling insurance or teaching high school math. Not Jonah Tong. This 22-year-old has taken the scenic route through the farm system. He started this season at Double-A Binghamton, where he posted a ridiculous 1.59 ERA while striking out 162 batters in just 20 starts. That is not a typo. He was punching out hitters at a rate that would make Jacob deGrom jealous. When you’re making professional baseball players look like they’re swinging pool noodles, it is time for a promotion.

Dominating Triple-A Like It’s Little League

The team couldn’t keep him in Double-A any longer without it becoming cruel and unusual punishment for opposing hitters. So they shipped him up to Triple-A Syracuse on August 11, where he promptly continued his reign of terror. In 11.2 innings of work, Tong hasn’t allowed a single run while striking out 17 batters.

Carlos Mendoza, the Mets’ manager who’s probably still pinching himself that he gets to call up prospects this good, put it perfectly: “It’s hard to keep him there.” When you are dominating minor league baseball like you’re playing against your little brother’s T-ball team, the writing is on the wall.

What Makes Tong Special

Currently sitting as the No. 4 prospect in the Mets’ system and No. 44 overall according to MLB Pipeline, Tong leads all of Minor League Baseball with 179 strikeouts this season. He has a 1.43 ERA across 22 starts between Double-A and Triple-A, which is the kind of stat line that makes opposing batting coaches want to call in sick.

But here is what is really impressive about Tong. He is not just racking up strikeouts against overmatched hitters. This kid has developed an arsenal that scouts are drooling over, and he has shown the kind of poise on the mound that you usually don’t see from someone his age.

The Dream Becomes Reality

Back in June, when SNY’s Danny Abriano asked Tong about potentially pitching at Citi Field, the young pitcher showed the kind of maturity that suggests he’s ready for this moment. “It’s always nice to dream,” he said. “I’m trying to live up to just being where my feet are.”

Well, his feet are about to be planted on the mound at Citi Field, and fans could not be more excited. After watching the team cycle through more starting pitchers than a speed dating event, having a legitimate prospect ready to contribute is like finding money in your winter coat pocket.

The Mets have already seen success with their recent call-up, Nolan McLean, who has allowed just two runs in his first two major league starts. If Tong can provide even half of that production, the rotation suddenly looks much deeper heading into the final stretch of the season.
