Following an impressive season in Lawrence, the Kansas Jayhawks Baseball program has elected to extend head coach Dan Fitzgerald.
Fitzgerald earned a six-year extension after leading the Jayhawks to their first NCAA Tournament appearance since 2014.
“This contract is a reflection of Dan Fitzgerald’s remarkable impact during his time in Lawrence,” Kansas AD Travis Goff said. “The program’s progression on the field is well documented and certainly unprecedented. This extension demonstrates our belief that we can compete for conference championships and CWS appearances under his leadership.”
“Dan is an elite leader and mentor for the student-athletes in his program, creating a culture of accountability, holistic excellence, and strong character,” Goff continued. “Fitz and his wonderful family have been an ideal fit for our department and the community, and we are excited for the future of Kansas Baseball under one of the very best leaders in the country.”
This season was a historic one at Hoglund Ballpark for numerous reasons. The Jayhawks set program records in Big 12 wins (20), conference wins (20), conference series wins (seven), conference series sweeps (five), road wins (20), come-from-behind wins (26), and home runs (104), in their return to postseason play.
Fitzgerald spoke about the incredible leadership at Kansas in the official press release, saying, “Kelly and I would like to thank Chancellor Girod, Travis Goff, Sean Lester, and the entire administration for the opportunity to continue to build Kansas Baseball. I am so appreciative of my staff who have worked relentlessly to recruit and develop the right student-athletes. This past season was a major step forward – one that gives us a great road map for the journey ahead.”
Fitzgerald finished his thoughts on the extension by saying, “Travis and I have a shared vision and excitement for the future of Jayhawk Baseball. His leadership and trust have been a major foundational piece of our success.”
