The Los Angeles Sparks won't win the WNBA championship this season, and they may not even reach the playoffs. But they have some hope that they're building a team that could contend in a few years.
They do have Kelsey Plum, the three-time All-Star they acquired from the Las Vegas Aces in a big trade this offseason. Plum helped lead the Aces to back-to-back titles in 2022 and 2023, and at age 30, she should have at least a few good years left in her.
On Friday's season opener against the expansion Golden State Valkyries, she went off for 37 points on 11-of-19 field-goal shooting while adding six assists and five steals. Thanks to her, the Sparks won by a final score of 84-67.
Afterward, she was seen exchanging pleasantries with Doc Rivers, the former head coach of the NBA's Los Angeles Clippers who is currently at the helm of the Milwaukee Bucks, as well as Golden State Warriors head coach Steve Kerr.

Plum averaged 17.8 points and 4.2 assists a game last season for the Aces. She's an accurate 3-point shooter, and despite her slight 5-foot-8 frame, she has always been a potent scorer.
The No. 1 pick in the 2017 draft, she is back in her home region now that she's a member of the Sparks. She grew up in Poway, Calif., which is just minutes away from San Diego, and she attended La Jolla Country Day School in La Jolla, an affluent community in San Diego.
On Friday, she scored 26 of her points in the second half when Los Angeles held the Valkyries to 28 points, including seven in the fourth quarter, to pull away for the victory.
