Could FIU and Kennesaw State really be factors in the run for the Conference USA championship? For the winner of this, yes.
FIU is 1-1 in the league, but it’s coming off a stunningly dominant 25-6 win over Western Kentucky. If it can beat the Hilltoppers, it can hang with everyone else on the slate, missing a hot Louisiana Tech team in the second half of the season.
Kennesaw State has been a deep cuts find after dropping the first two games of the season to Wake Forest and Indiana. It’s on a five-game winning streak including a 35-7 win over Louisiana Tech, but now it has to deal with three road games in the next four.

What are the Owls doing so right over this four-game winning streak? It’s a cliché, but just win, baby.
They don’t do anything at a particularly high level, but they’re facing turnovers, the run defense has been great against everyone but Indiana, and overall, the team is great at - cliché No. 2 - winning the moment. FIU is a team on the rise under Willie Simmons, but it turns the ball over too much, Kennesaw State has been great at forcing takeaways over the last few weeks, and …
When the running game works, the Panthers win. The balance was there with a good day from the passing attack against WKU, but it’s the ground attack that settles everything down. FIU is 3-0 when running for over 160 yards. It takes control of games when it does that, and it has to get things going at home from the start. However …
Kennesaw State is fantastic against the run. Jerry Mack’s team doesn’t necessarily make a lot of things happen in the backfield, but it keeps ground games from getting to the second level on a consistent basis. Only Indiana was able to run on this bunch.
It’s an odd Tuesday night road game, but again with that yardage mark, FIU is 0-3 when running for under 160 yards. Only Indiana got that many or more against Kennesaw State.
