Kirk Herbstreit Sends Clear Message On ESPN’s SEC Bias Amid College Football Playoff

The College Football Playoff semifinal round begins on Thursday with No. 6 seed Penn State facing off against No. 7 seed Notre Dame.

The other game is on Friday with No. 5 seed Texas facing No. 8 seed Ohio State as the top four seeds all lost in the Quarterfinal round.

When the 12-team field was announced, the biggest debate was Alabama being left out in favor of SMU, and the SEC bias debate continued on for some time.

However, there is just one SEC team remaining in the field, and that is Texas, which just joined the conference this season.

On Tuesday, Kirk Herbstreit joined the On3 Sports podcast with Andy Staples and Ari Wasserman and set the record straight on that debate.

"We could not have paid for a better final four with Notre Dame, Ohio State, Penn State, and Texas," Herbstreit said. "The only one missing is Michigan... So this idea we want Alabama, Texas A&M, and Auburn. Are you kidding me? If you're asking us who would we want, we'll take Ohio State every year, Notre Dame. This is a ratings bonanza."

"If you're going to accuse us of anything, you should accuse of wanting Ohio State, wanting Notre Dame, and these big brands," Herbstreit stated.

Herbstreit is part of ESPN's "College GameDay" crew and has traveled the country to see the top teams face off time and time again.

However, he strongly suggests there is no SEC bias from ESPN.

This year, Georgia, No. 2 seed Georgia and No. 9 seed Tennessee were the only two SEC teams in the field with Alabama, Ole Miss, and South Carolina right on the outside looking in.

As Herbstreit said, they want the big brands such as Ohio State and Oregon, and he even mentions how an Ohio State-Notre Dame title game would do massive ratings.

"If we get Ohio State and Notre Dame in the national championship, do you think we're going to be like, 'Dog gone it."

The Orange Bowl between Penn State and Notre is on Thursday night and the Cotton Bowl between Texas and Ohio State is on Friday, so soon enough we will know the national title game matchup.
