Kraigg Brathwaite was appointed Jason Holder’s successor as the West Indies Test Captain in March 2021. Before this, he had served as a stand-in captain for a number of matches. Jason Holder led the team from 2015 to 2021.

Kraigg Brathwaite announced his resignation as Test Captain on March 31, 2025. His exit comes at a time when the team is preparing for the upcoming home series against Australia. During his leadership, he led West Indies in 39 Tests, winning ten and losing 22 matches.

Cricket West Indies (CWI) announced that Kraigg’s replacement will be revealed next week. Additionally, there were some changes to the West Indies T20 squad. Current ODI Captain, Shai Hope, was named the new T20I captain, replacing Rovman Powell who had captained the team since May 2023. During his tenure, the team improved its ICC T20I ranking, moving from ninth to fifth position. The changes have brought divided opinions with former players like Dwayne Bravo questioning Powell’s removal. Powell also led West Indies in home series victories against India, England and South Africa.

CWI President, Dr. Kishore Nalin Shallow, took to his social media page to acknowledge Brathwaite.” Kraigg, you have led with heart and resilience, and I couldn’t be prouder or more grateful for your dedication. You have guided us through one of the most challenging periods with grace and humility. I look forward to celebrating your 100th Test match with you in the months ahead, “he wrote.

He also praised Powell’s leadership stating:” Rovman, your leadership has been nothing short of exceptional. You have set the foundation for us to step into a new era, making sacrifices that will not go unnoticed. In time, your efforts will be rightfully rewarded. Shai, the hopes of the region rest on your shoulders, but you are no stranger to this responsibility. I have full confidence that you will face this challenge with courage and professionalism.”
