A top executive for the iconic LEGO company has reportedly been killed in a skiing accident.
According to the New York Post, 64-year-old Michael Halbye suffered fatal injuries from a fall while skiing in the Swiss Alps this past weekend. He was airlifted to the hospital but tragically passed away from internal bleeding.
Halbye served as vice-chairman at the Danish investment company Kirkbi, LEGO's parent company. He had been a member of the company's board of directors since 2020 and was promoted to vice chairman in 2022.
In a statement, Kirkbi chairman Thomas Kirk Kristiansen called him a "close, trusted partner" who would greatly missed.
"It is with great sadness that we received the news of Michael's sudden passing. Our thoughts and care go to Michael's family and loved ones, who are now faced with having to process the unexpected loss of a man who in all facets of life has left a great and positive impression on those around him,” Kristiansen said, via Independent.co.
“We will miss Michael as Vice Chairman but first and foremost as a person. May his memory be honored."
Halbye was also a close personal friend of the Denmark royal family. Among the very first to release a statement on his passing was Queen Mary of Denmark. He had served as a board member on her foundation for over 17 years and was friends with both the queen and Denmark's King Frederick X.
"I have received with great sadness the news of Michael Halbye's sudden death,” the queen wrote. “Michael Halbye was a man who possessed a rare positive energy, extensive knowledge and a strong commitment to making a difference for those outside the community. He was also my friend, and he will be missed by many. My thoughts go out to his family and close friends."
Our hearts go out to Halbye's family and loved ones.
