With Lewis Hamilton’s highly anticipated F1 movie racing toward a June release, excitement around the film is hitting top gear. But behind the scenes, the crew drew a comparison between Brad Pitt, who stars as the film’s lead, and another Hollywood legend: Tom Cruise.
In a GQ Italia feature, director Joseph Kosinski, who steered Top Gun: Maverick, admitted the experience on set would’ve been very different if Cruise were behind the wheel in the new film.
“Tom always pushes himself to the limit,” Kosinski said. “Both [Pitt and Cruise] have a natural talent for driving. But I have to admit, Tom would have kept us a little more on our toes.”
Action vehicle supervisor Graham Kelly agreed, revealing the difference in style between the two actors. “We would definitely have had an accident,” Kelly told GQ with a nervous laugh.
“Tom doesn’t just push to the maximum—he goes beyond all limits. Brad, on the other hand, listens, evaluates, and knows his abilities. He’d be the first to say: ‘Ok this is not for me.’”
The film—co-produced by seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton—follows Pitt as a veteran racer guiding a young rookie on a fictional F1 team called APXGP. Shot during real Grand Prix weekends with input from actual drivers, the film has been billed as one of the most authentic racing movies ever made.
