LSU Gymnastics Head Coach Jay Clark Previews NCAA Semifinals

Later tonight at 8 p.m. CT, the LSU Tigers will face off with the Michigan State Spartans, UCLA Bruins and Utah Utes in the National Semifinals with a trip to the National Championship on the line.

LSU Head Coach Jay Clark broke down the Tigers' road to the semifinals and why he thinks his team is ready to return to the National Championship for the third consecutive season.

Like every team still remaining, the Tigers had a tough road to the semifinals. They had to beat the likes of the Michigan Wolverines, Maryland Terrapins, No. 16 Arkansas Razorbacks, No. 9 Kentucky Wildcats and No. 8 Michigan State Spartans to make it here.

Clark reflected on the team's journey so far and what's to come.

“I’m proud of my team. It was tough to get out of regionals, and we did what we needed to do to win and advance,"said Clark. "Our mindset doesn’t change heading into nationals because mindset is a permanent intention for us. It’s about the next five minutes. They’ve done a great job of staying in the right headspace all year long, and now we’re just focused on taking our next step to the ultimate destination.”

Despite one of their toughest meets of the season on the horizon, Clark doesn't seem too worried. His team has been battle tested - just look at the SEC Championship where they beat two of the top-three teams in the country to repeat as conference champs. They've been through the ringer, and they're ready for what's ahead.

“We understand that the level of competition as we move through any tournament bracket increases," said Clark. "We’ve been battle tested, and the SEC Championship was a great example of that when you had the top three teams in the country in the same meet, but our team is bought in and we are maintaining our same approach. The destination is not the definition for us. It's how we go about getting there that will define who we are.”

The Tigers are just a couple wins away from repeating as national champions, but first, they have to make it through tonight. It wont' be easy, but this team has the makings of a championship team.
