Essex has strengthened its squad by signing Australian all-rounder Madeline Penna for the first-ever Women’s T20 Blast. The tournament is set to begin in May, marking a new chapter in domestic women’s cricket.

Penna, 24, has built a solid reputation in Australian and New Zealand domestic circuits. She represents South Australia in the Women’s National Cricket League and plays for the Adelaide Strikers in the Women’s Big Bash League. She has also had a stint with Canterbury in New Zealand, gaining experience in different conditions.

A right-handed batter and leg-spinner, she has made her mark in both disciplines. She has scored centuries in both formats and has a career-best bowling performance of 4-20 in the WBBL. Her ability to contribute in multiple ways makes her a valuable addition to the Essex squad.

Speaking about the move, Penna expressed her excitement. “This is a great chance for me to challenge myself in a new setting. Playing in both Australia and New Zealand has helped me grow, and I’m looking forward to this next step,” she said.

Essex is among the eight fully professional teams in the newly restructured domestic competition. Previously, the women’s county game followed a regional system, but the changes are set to bring more visibility and structure to the sport.

Essex’s campaign will begin with an away fixture against Hampshire on May 30. The team will also take part in the 50-over One-Day Cup, which starts next month.

Team director Andy Tennant is confident that Penna will make a big impact. “We’re really happy to have Maddie with us for the Blast. She’s a quality player who brings experience, and we believe she’ll fit in well with our squad. She can help us compete for the title,” he said.

Meanwhile, other teams are also bringing in international players to strengthen their squads. Surrey recently secured the services of Australian all-rounder Grace Harris, making her the first overseas signing in the new professional setup.

With top-tier talent coming in, the Women’s T20 Blast promises to be a competitive and exciting tournament. Essex will be hoping that Penna’s presence helps them in their pursuit of silverware.
