Who does Maryland miss from the Big Ten schedule?

Iowa, Minnesota, Northwestern, Ohio State, Oregon, Penn State, Purdue, USC

The Terps don’t have to play Ohio State, Oregon, or Penn State. There’s no whining about any other part of this. Name three teams from the Big Ten you don’t want to play, and with the possible exception of Michigan, there you go.

Missing Iowa, Minnesota, and USC is a sweet deal, too - all three of those games would be Lean Loss for Maryland. With all of that said, not having Purdue on the schedule stinks.

Maryland football schedule, the good and the bad

The Good: Forgetting what Northern Illinois did to Notre Dame in Week 2 of last season, the non-conference schedule is about as squishy-soft as it gets - Maryland isn’t exactly extending itself.

There’s a trip to Wisconsin to open up the Big Ten season, but the Terps only leave College Park once before October 18th, and twice before November 8th. And yeah, they get Michigan and Indiana on the slate, but those are home games.

The Bad: November is brutal.

There’s a week off at the end of October to get ready, and then comes the fun starting with a now-not-given game against Indiana. Three of the final four games are on the road with the lone home date coming against Michigan.

Going to Wisconsin and UCLA for the first two road games aren’t bad if those two don’t rise up and be stronger than 2024 - both teams should be better.

Maryland Football Schedule: Best and worst case scenarios

Best Case Scenario: Maryland gets by Washington at home and at least splits the dates with Nebraska and Indiana. Do that before the November road games kick in, and and they’ll like have at least five wins in the bank. Split the road dates at Wisconsin and UCLA, and they’re bowl eligible before the brutal finishing kick.

The team won’t be in the mix for the Big Ten title, but it pulls off at least one win over the final four games to get a decent bowl.

Worst Case Scenario: The Terps needs a win going into those final four games to go bowling.

They lose to both Wisconsin and UCLA on the road and drop two of the three home games against Washington, Nebraska, and Indiana. In that case, forget it - a bowl isn’t happening. They lose all of the last four games, and the new coaching search is on.

What Will Happen: (Feb 10) Maryland should be quirky-tough enough to fight its way to six wins. There’s no real excuse with this schedule - again, the Terps miss the likely three best teams in the Big Ten - but it’ll take a few upsets to get to six or more victories. It’ll do it, but it’ll be a grind.

The What Will Happen will be updated several times this offseason
