HOPEWELL TOWNSHIP– After unexpectedly taking over as Hopewell’s interim head football coach a year ago, Matt Mottes laid a foundation, started to create a culture and had the Vikings within one game of qualifying for the WPIAL Playoffs.
Mottes impressed plenty of people along the way as he was voted Co-Coach of the Year in the section but more importantly, he impressed people within the school district.
That was proven tonight as the Hopewell School Board voted to hired Mottes as Hopewell’s permanent head football coach.
Congratulation to Mottes and his coaching staff who now will get a chance to build upon what was started last season.
Because Mottes took over on an interim basis, the district had to formally open the job and that’s exactly what they did. After going through resumes and interviewing candidates, the board decided to reward Mottes for the job he did last season.
After receiving the news that he had been hoping for, Vikings Sports Now spoke with Mottes about officially becoming Hopewell’s head coach.
“It means a lot to me, Mottes tells Vikings Sports Now. “I’m really excited to be able to see this through. It’s an honor and I’m humbled and honored that the school board thought enough to remove the interim tag and make me the head coach. We plan on continuing to build a positive culture and help these boys have success both on and off the field, along with in the classroom.”
After going 4-6 last season, the expectations will be different in 2025 as making the playoffs is what the entire coaching staff and players are expecting.
Why not, considering the nucleus of that will return, like James Armstrong, Kingston Krotec, Logan Triscila, Rocco Marcantonio, Nick Thomas, Brian McCabe, Brody Rock, Jake Pollick, Julian Baldwin, Vinny Boris, Tre Cameron, Avery Bokor, James Gill, Zander Muzy, etc.
“I believe that the sky is the limit for us. I think that we have a realistic opportunity to compete for a championship. I expect us to be a playoff team and a contender out of our section.”
