Megan McConnell Explodes for 35 Points in Duquesne Win

On Sunday afternoon, Duquesne women’s basketball took down Canisius at home behind a massive performance from star guard Megan McConnell.

McConnell turned in a career performance, setting career highs in points and steals in a game. She finished the contest with five three pointers, too, setting a season high.

McConnell finished with 35 points, nine steals, six assists, four rebounds, and not a single turnover. That was the first game this season that McConnell has not had a turnover. She went 14 for 21 from the field, making five of her nine three-point tries.

Duquesne won the game in a landslide, 90-66, pulling away with a strong second quarter. In addition to McConnell, Duquesne’s Jerni Kiaku turned in an efficient 15-point outing, and Kiandra Browne added 11 points. The team shot 33 for 66 from the field, an even 50% mark. It also went 12 for 29 from three-point land as a team, a 41% day.

Duquesne has now won six games in a row after falling to Kent State on the road.

McConnell is now averaging 19.2 points, 7.3 rebounds, and 5.7 assists per game for the Dukes through ten matchups.

“Her maturity off the floor has always been good, but she has taken that to another level in terms of her leadership capabilities,” Duquesne head coach Dan Burt said about McConnell after an early-season win over Robert Morris weeks ago. “Her goals are attainable and reachable, and that is, to win at Atlantic 10 championship and play in the NCAA Tournament, and to play in the WNBA. Those are all realistic goals.”

Duquesne will now play against Bowling Green on Saturday, Dec. 21 12 12 p.m. at home.
