Austin Herro is heading to St. Thomas. The former South Carolina guard announced his commitment via the transfer portal. The younger brother of Miami Heat star Tyler Herro, Austin is looking to carve out his own path at the Division I level.
"Let's work," Herro posted on social media, signaling his excitement for the next chapter.
Herro, a six-foot-three guard, spent two seasons at South Carolina, appearing in 10 games last season after redshirting in 2023-24. Before his time with the Gamecocks, he was a standout at Whitnall High School in Wisconsin, where he averaged 14.8 points, 6.4 rebounds, and 4.3 assists per game as a senior, leading his team to a state championship appearance.
Now, with three years of eligibility remaining, Herro joins a St. Thomas program that is gearing up for a pivotal season. The Tommies will be eligible for the NCAA Tournament for the first time as a Division I program and are set to open their new Lee and Penny Anderson Arena in October.
Herro's versatility and scoring ability could make him a valuable piece for head coach Johnny Tauer, who has been active in the transfer portal. With St. Thomas looking to build a competitive roster, Herro's experience and skill set could help the team make a strong push in its first year of full tournament eligibility.
For Herro, this is a fresh start and a chance to prove himself at the next level. If he can translate his high school success into consistent production, he could be a key contributor for the Tommies moving forward.
