If you blinked, you might’ve thought it was Sunday in the NFL. But it was something far rarer, as boxing legend Terence “Bud” Crawford catching picture-perfect spirals from NFL icon Michael Vick at Norfolk State University.
Under the golden Virginia sun at Dick Price Stadium, two worlds collided in a way that electrified HBCU sports fans and shook up social media. Crawford, the undefeated welterweight world champion (41-0, 30 KOs), stepped off the canvas and into a receiver role, showcasing elite footwork and soft hands that looked right at home on a football field.
With his highly anticipated September 13 super middleweight showdown against Canelo Alvarez looming, most would expect Crawford to be deep in fight camp. But Saturday was about fun, and about community.
Lining up across from DeMarcus McMillan, Norfolk State’s new Director of Football Operations and a former military vet, Crawford brought the same surgical precision to his routes that he uses to dissect opponents in the ring.
On one play, McMillan tried to press him at the line. Crawford slipped the jam, turned on the jets, and hauled in a perfect over-the-shoulder pass from Vick. On another, a slant left McMillan sprawled out on the turf, much to the delight of NSU staff watching from the sideline.
For Michael Vick, this wasn’t just a casual throwing session. The Newport News native has long used his platform to spotlight HBCUs. His new role as Norfolk State head coach is yet another signal that HBCUs are fertile ground for moments of athletic greatness and Black excellence.
As “all-time quarterback,” Vick completed a poetic revenge pass to McMillan later in the session, a 30-yard dart that was caught in stride against Crawford, who’d switched over to play corner.
Vick later posted on Instagram: “Money always on @tbudcrawford…”, a nod of respect from one legend to another.
What started as a few routes turned into a viral celebration of Black athleticism, unity, and the magnetic pull of HBCU culture. As Crawford eyes boxing immortality, moments like this only deepen his legend, and amplify the reach of schools like Norfolk State.
It’s the kind of crossover moment HBCU athletics thrives on: elite talent, cultural connection, and unforgettable energy.
